Top 7 Food Items for Urban Survival

Submitted by on November 29, 2011 – 6:29 pmNo Comment
Building a long term food storage supply is critical for your family’s security in case of emergency.  Let’s say that there was a major breakdown in society that caused your normal grocery store to run out of food within a couple of hours.  What are you going to do for food?
Here is a list of the items we feel are most critical to have on hand. This is not an all inclusive list, it is more like a list of the absolute bare necessities that should get you through a long term urban survival situation.  We also have tried to give you an amount of that particular foodstuff to have on hand.  Remember, this is just a starting point.
  1. Wheat                         200 LBS per person
  2. Rice                            100 LBS per person
  3. Beans                            75 LBS per person
  4. Fats and Oils                 15 LBS per person
  5. Powdered Milk             75 LBS per person
  6. Sugars                           70 LBS per person
  7. Salt                                25 LBS per person

Here is more info on each item.
Wheat:  Get at a minimum 200 pounds per person.  It is cheap (right now), stores well, and is one of the most perfect foods for long term survival.  It has almost the perfect mix of protein, carbs, etc for the human body.  A one year supply should only cost you about $70.00 today.  It will most likely be going up soon. Don’t know what to do with wheat–here is a great recipe for the world’s best homemade wheat bread.
Rice:  This is a good change from eating wheat every day.  For people who don’t like or are allergic to wheat it can be substituted completely.  Don’t get brown rice, it spoils in less than six months.  White rice doesn’t have tons of nutrition but it will keep you full.
Beans:  I love beans.  They fill you up.  Give you energy.  And they keep you going.  I would actually get more than just the 75 pounds recommended.  Get any kind you like.  I prefer black, but pinto beans are good also.
Fats and Oils:  Cooking oil becomes really scarce in an urban survival situation.  You need it to cook anything unless you are going to boil your food.  Fats and oils don’t store super well so take care to rotate this out of your storage frequently.  Also get some peanut butter.  It is a great comfort food and provides a ton of energy.
Powdered Milk:  Be careful with this stuff.  It can break the bank.  Very expensive.  But, critical for good nutrition, especially if you have children in the family.  And don’t get the alternative stuff, it does not store well.  Get real powdered milk.  Studies have been done that prove it stores almost indefinitely.  It will change color (turn dark) after about six or seven years but it can still be used in a pinch.  If you are suspicious for any reason about any food stuff, it is better to not use it.  But if you absolutely have to, try a very small amount and wait 24 hours.  If there are no bad reactions, then you can probably use it safely.
Sugars:  An absolute must.  I would go with honey because it stores pretty much forever.
Salt:  The human body needs salt.  Plus, if your urban survival begins to drag out longer than you had hoped, you can use salt to lure animals into traps.  All animals need salt and a quick little salt lick will provide surprising results.  More on making a salt lick later.

That is our down and dirty list of the top 7 food items you should stock away immediately.  Start today.  Go buy some of at least one of the items on this list and then set up a plan to get the rest.
