Boker Kalashnikov Auto Conversion Knife–Product Review
For those knife enthusiasts who love a good every day carry blade, this is an automatic conversion knife you should seriously consider. I carried a Boker Kalashnikov for about six months. It still stands as one of my most favorite knives. The automatic button is easy to push. The spine safety locks up tight. The blade is made of AUS8 stainless steel which means it keeps a good edge and is reasonably easy to sharpen. The handle is made of aluminum and has a great shape. The handle also has texturing on it which means it is easy to grip and hold onto. The best thing about all of this–this is a knife you can get at a reasonable price. Typically you can pick one up for around $45.00. Not bad for an every day carry knife that performs when you need it to. This is one of those knives that you can use for everything and not only will it get the job done, you won’t feel bad about beating it up because the price is right.
This knife is an auto conversion. This means that after it is built in the factory, someone adds a spring into it to make it into an automatic knife. The springs are typically very strong and make the blade snap right out. You do need to be careful about where you buy your Kalashnikov. Some companies that sell these use weak springs. The only drawback to the conversion process is that once the knife is converted you lose your warranty with Boker. This is a reasonable trade off for me. I like to have an automatic knife. Besides, these are constructed so well that they rarely have any problems. They are basic enough, that if you do run into any problems, you can probably fix them yourself.
A couple of things that I really love about the Boker Kalashnikov 74. It comes in a presentation box that is shaped like a banana clip from the famous Kalashnikov 74 machine gun. It also has an old style Soviet Star on the big pivot screw at the top of the handle. These small touches make an already great knife even better. The Kalashnikov is available in a wide variety of handle colors and blade colors and shapes–you can generally find them for a great price over at the Boker Knives section on BladeOps.com.
